So much for Independence Day.

July 5th, 2006 by Sarah and Rahul

On July 5th, we found out Sarah’s pregnant.

This is how it happened (the finding out part, not the other part!):

RAHUL

My half of the story is the less interesting half, so we’ll start with that.

The 5th was the first day of Sarah’s third year—beginning her clinical rotations with the toughest of the bunch: surgery. She was nervous about starting this phase of her education, and about the schedule it would entail. So when the family clinic at the university called the home (Sarah was still out rotating, so I answered) inquiring as to which pharmacy to send her vitamins, I thought nothing of it. Vitamins are one of the tools Sarah uses to stay balanced in Medical School.

When the clinic called a second time reporting that Sarah had left some of her notes from class behind, I still thought nothing of it. I figured, though, that this was reason enough to give her a call and let her know. Lost notes could cause big problems.

So I called, and we had a bizarre conversation. I let her know where to pick up her prescription, and about the notes. She then started a little speech (which didn’t make sense) about why she was at the clinic and how it was nice to see her friends there and such… Whatever. I was busy working, couldn’t follow the story, and she was hard to hear. So we got off the phone.

When she finally gets home for the day, I am on the phone with a client, so as she rounds the corner to my office I gently close the door so as not to be distracted. I finish my call, come out of my office, give her a hug and a kiss and ask

“So what’s up with those vitamins?”

As the words come out of my mouth I realize what’s going on. I don’t think I’m smart enough to have put it together on my own… I think Sarah’s face gave it away as I was asking.

Then more big hugs and kisses.

That’s my version.

SARAH

Yes, folks. It’s true. Someone got me pregnant. I am knocked up, in the family way, bun in the oven, preggers.

Rahul and I decided about 6 weeks ago to start trying for a baby, but I don’t think either of us expected it to happen so fast. I spent four of those six weeks traveling and/or sick) so I didn’t really expect to be preggers. In fact, Monday and Tuesday I was sure I was getting my period—I was bloated, irritable and crampy, just like I often am when the Big P is on it’s way. And I kept feeling like it was coming…but it just didn’t. Then Tuesday night I started to think…maybe it’s not coming because it’s NOT COMING!

Wednesday I stopped by Student Health at school for a sneaky pregnancy test. I was in and out of there in like 15 minutes. I peed in a cup, the nurse told me I was pregnant, and then I left to get back to my surgical rotation. I wasn’t really that shocked at all. I guess I knew.

Anyway, I headed back to “work” for a few hours, but got out early and stopped by the mall for my required copy of “What to Expect When You are Expecting.” While I was there Rahul called me to tell me that Student Health called and I could pick up my vitamins (my PRE-NATAL vitamins) at the university pharmacy any time. The call was totally unexpected (I didn’t even know they were calling in vitamins for me), so of course to cover it up I launched into a ridiculous story that didn’t even make sense. I think I babbled for five minutes, then hung up. So smooth.

On the way home I started thinking that Rahul MUST know I was pregnant. Why else would I be getting vitamins, for heaven’s sake? I figured they Rahul was just being coy and didn’t want to ruin any potential surprise I might have planned. In fact, by the time I got home, I was convinced that BOTH of us knew I was pregnant, but that we were BOTH pretending that we didn’t.

When I got home, Rahul and I were saying hello, and the whole time I was looking at his face trying to decide if he knew or not. I had just decided that he probably didn’t when he asked me about the vitamins. I froze and Rahul quickly figured it out. Again with the smooth, huh? So THEN I told him I was pregnant. It was fun. We called our families that afternoon and had Zio’s Pizza to celebrate.

Still very early to be telling people, but it seems we just can’t help it.

And by the way, don’t be totally fooled by Rahul’s screaming face at the top of this blog. Yes, yes…he has been making that face quite a bit (I hope it doesn’t turn into a permanent tic), but he whispered to me that he had also been a little bit disappointed when he thought I was getting my period.

To be continued! Yay!
